The Difference between LED Lights & Traditional Lights

LED is an abbreviation that stands for Light Emitting Diodes. A diode refers to an electrical device that allows current to move through it in a particular direction more quickly than it permits it to travel the other way. In this case, the diode emits lights as the current moves through it.

In contrast, traditional (incandescent) bulbs work by giving off light when an electric current moves through its filament. Tungsten is used to produce this filament and it becomes hot as it glows. The result is that LED bulbs are 25% to 80% more efficient than traditional bulbs because they don’t emit this heat. Additionally, they can outlive incandescent bulbs by three to twenty-five times. LED lights and fixtures are an ideal choice if you use solar power or a portable generator. That means you can use them successfully in remote areas.

Factors That You Should Consider When Purchasing LED Lights

The Level of Brightness

The lumens of an LED light and its wattage determine its level of brightness. Higher wattages and higher lumens equal a brighter light. In most cases LED lights range from 9W to 22W, but some go as high as 28W. LEDs usually have a range of 450 lumens to 1600 lumens. Interestingly, a 22W LED light has the same lumens as a 100W incandescent light. Bright LED lights are suitable for a dining room setting. Be careful not overdo it. Three thousand to six thousand lumens should be enough for this type of room.

The Color Temperature

Color Temperature refers to the appearance or characteristics of the light. For instance, is it warm white, white, or cool? The appearance can also be called moonlight, horizon daylight, or electronic flash. You can measure these characteristics by looking at its absolute temperature. For example, a 3000K LED light is a warm white while a 5000K LED light is horizon daylight. Choose a color temperature that fits your personality and the mood you want in the room. Low color temperatures are ideal for bedrooms and LED can lights give the best dispersion.

Dimmability and Angle

Other factors that ought to be considered when choosing an LED light include its dimmability and the beam angle. Dimmable LED lights cost a bit more than ordinary ones do, but they are ideal for entertainment settings.

The beam angle determines how the LED light spreads. The narrower it is, then the more concentrated the light will be. Choose an LED light with a broad beam to illuminate a larger space such as a living room.

Once you determine that LED lighting is a good option for your project, discussing your needs with an experienced specialist is important. Remember that LEDs are not equivalent to traditional lights so take this critical step to avoid mistakes.
