Try stacking books by color or style in groups of three to five.
Do you have that one special piece or a whole house full of special items? I think each and every one of us has walked into a home or office and been wowed by a featured piece of artwork or furniture. When I purchased my School Lane Hills house 17 years ago the owner had a museum of special pieces – and probably just as many in the attic as were being used! She had good ideas and a good eye for design. Not only was the home full of attractive furniture with flare, the owner had created eye-catching vignettes with objects and accessories that had different textures, colors, and shapes on bookcases, walls and tables.
Don’t know where to start accessorizing? How about styling items on a bookcase? An interesting bookcase can be mesmerizing! You will need books, objects such as small sculptures, bookends, decorative bowls, boxes, vases, as well as a few paintings and/or framed photos. You can start with a lot and scale down. Try to use only items that complement the room and each other. Though books are often read electronically today, you most likely still have a lot of books! Try grouping them by color or style in groups of three to five. Create grouping of similar sized books for vertical placement and large (at the bottom) to small (at the top) for horizontal placement. Zig zag these groupings down the book shelf and place a few in the middle. Now do the same with the other objects you have accumulated. Keep like things grouped together and try to vary height and texture on each shelf. Place similar items both vertically and horizontally. Work from the back to the front, placing larger objects – like a small colorful painting – in the back and smaller objects in the front. You can mix these objects with the books too.
Leave a little open space so the viewer’s eye can rest and settle on the most important items. Creating a stunning bookcase may take a few tweaks but the results should be amazing!
